How to create an Application Root

Applications written in the .NET Framework require an AppRoot to run. Some tools, such as Visual Studios .NET, will automatically create an AppRoot for your when publishing and editing a .NET Application. If you are not using a similar program, or are deploying your application using FrontPage or FTP, you will have to create the AppRoot yourself using the instructions below.

Note: The following information pertains only to Windows Hosting plans. Some features described are not available for all accounts, and may appear differently in your Control Panel interface.


The method used to create an Application Root differs based on the Server Control Panel. Please refer to the replies below and follow the instructions for your specific control panel.

Hosting Controller Control Panel

How to create an ASP.NET Application Root using the Hosting Controller control panel.

1. Log into the control Panel
2. Click on Domains and select your domain
3. Click on Properties
4. Scroll Down and click on Virtual Directories
5. Click on Add Virtual Directory
6. For "Directory Name: " Enter the directory name.
e.g. If your application is in d:\webspace\actsvr\yoursite\yoursitename.com\www\MyApp type in "MyApp" as the directory name.
7. For "Directory Name: " Select the actual directory like shown above.
8. Make sure the correct framework is selected.
9. Set other settings are appropriate.
10. Click on Add Virtual Directory

The selected folder will become an application root.

Windows Hosting Control Panel (Not Hosting Controller)

Create an Application Root in our Windows Hosting (Not Hosting Controller) Control Panel.
This covers our Windows Hosting Plans, our Windows Virtual Web Hosting and Managed Windows Web Hosting.

The following steps assume that you have accessed your Control Panel. For information about accessing your Control Panel.

To Create a New Application Root (AppRoot):

1. On the Hosting Control Panel, click Web Sites. The Web Site Maintenance window appears.
2. Click the name of the Web Site you want. The Site Details window appears.
3. Click Application Roots. The AppRoots window for your Web Site appears.
4. Under Add new AppRoot, type a directory path for this AppRoot. Note: This should be in the format of /MyNetApp .
5. Click Create AppRoot. The AppRoots window refreshes with a confirmation message.
6. Click Done when you are finished. Your Web Site Details window appears.


To Remove an Existing Application Root (AppRoot):

1. On the Hosting Control Panel, click Web Sites. The Web Site Maintenance window appears.
2. Click the name of the Web Site you want. The Site Details window appears.
3. Click Application Roots. The AppRoots window for your Web Site appears.
4. Under AppRoots currently bound for this site, click the AppRoot you want to delete.
5. Click Remove. The AppRoots window refreshes with a confirmation message.
6. Click Done when you are finished. Your Web Site Details window appears.
