How to set up Windows VPN access to SQL server on Windows XP (Windows 2000 is similar)

1. Open the control panel
2. Click on "Network Connections"
3. Click on "New Connection Wizard"
4. Click on "Next"

5. Select "Connect to the network at my workplace" and click on "Next"

6. Select "Virtual Private Network connection"

7. Click on "Next" and then enter a name for this connection. Click on "Next"

8. If you are using a dial up connection select the connection, otherwise select "Do not dial this connection."
Click on "Next"


 

9. Enter in the domain name or IP address provided for this VPN connection. Click
on "Next"

10. Specify how accessible you want this connection and click on "Next".

11. Add a shortcut to your desktop and click on "Finish"

12. To connect to the SQL Server via VPN double click on the ICON on your desktop

13. Enter in your user ID and password and click on Connect. Once you have connected you should be able to run SQL Enterprise Manager as before. Be sure to close the VPN connection when you are done.
